Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are always welcome at Codman Community Farms, whether helping with the chores, collecting and cleaning eggs, planting, painting or fixing – we can find a place for you.   Some people help out on a regular basis, some seasonally and others on a one-time basis.   Groups, teams, individually – contact us!

Our needs include :

  • Pick your own garden planting and maintenance
  • General garden and ground maintenance
  • Children’s garden leadership
  • Farm store displays
  • Events organization
  • Egg collection
  • Hay mowing, storage and delivery
  • Carpentry, sign painting
  • General farm chores
  • Marketing/PR
  • Communications writing, design and layout

Many of the following can be done anytime, without permission or supervision:

Many of the following can be done anytime, without permission or supervision:

Clean duck and chicken water bowls – one time chore that can be done daily by young children with adult supervision.   Detailed instructions on separate paper.

Weeding – the gardens around the office, house and farm can always use some tending, just dig right in!

Cleaning – the store can always use a dusting, the store, barn and office can be swept and the bathrooms cleaned!   Supplies are located in the office closets, and the large broom is usually in the barn.

Window Washing – If this is your passion, we love sun and clean windows and welcome any scrubbing you’d like to do.

General Grounds Clean-up – Pick up trash, branches lying around.

Run Errands – like to drive around with a purpose?   Pick up eggs in Bedford, meat in Groton, supplies in Littleton or Acton.    Take chickens to the auction… just check in and see what needs to be done!

Price meat – a great way to apply math to every day life!

If you want to get involved with any of the following, some training is required. We ask that you make a commitment of at least 2 months, twice a month for 3 hours each time.   We will set up some training opportunities, and then count on you to come on a regular basis and work independently.

Egg Collecting – Volunteers collect our eggs, wash and package them, the process takes about an hour.  One egg collector covers each day of the week. Occasionally there are vacancies for a weekly slot, and we have a substitute list.   If you are interested, we can match you up with a collector for training and then add you to the list.

Farm Chores – help care for the animals by cleaning stalls, moving fences, providing food and water, taking the animals to pasture. The chores vary, but there are always things to do.  Chores are most suited to adults or older children with adults.

Splitting Wood – we obtain wood for free, to chop and sell for farm income.   We can teach you to operate the wood splitter.

Hay Operations –

a. help load/unload hay, ability to lift and stack 50 lb bales.

b. operate farm tractors and hay equipment.

c. operate hay rides for farm events and outside organizations.

Tour Leader – Lead groups around the farm, providing an in-depth visit. Tours are primarily given to pre-schools; comfort and love of this age group is more important than in-depth farm knowledge.  We would love to offer more tours according to a volunteer’s interest.

Pick Your Own Garden – plan, plant and tend this garden during the spring and summer.

Bookkeeping – monthly tasks available!

Short-term opportunities to get involved in the farm!

Events – we are always looking for help with events, you can plan and organize, or just show up and help that day!

Signs for Education – if you have a question while on the farm, chances are someone else does too!   Research the answer, and make a sign that we can post!   We’ll pay for any supplies needed.

Teaching – assist with one of our children’s classes, or offer a class of your own.   We’ll work with you.

Computer Maintenance – we often have technological trouble, and would love to have some computer experts to help maintain our systems.

  • Courtney Murphy:

I really love animals and am looking to volunteer at a farm. I do not have much experience in farming but would love to be out in nature as the weather gets warmer. I work in Weston Ma 8-5 p.m. I am looking to do a few hours one night a week, or on a weekend. I am a good worker and can provide a reference. I just love animals and would be interested to learn more about gardening. I had a garden before but am a novice in garderning. Could someone get back to me and let me know what the needs are? Also, I would be willing to do some time over the weekends.

    Thanks!

  • I am thirteen years old and I am experienced working with farm animals. I volunteered with a horse barn near my house. We gave tours, mucked out stalls, picked paddocks, stacking making hay bales, watered the horses and groomed all the animals including horses, goats (my favorite), chickens and ducks. My and my mom have a garden behind our house and we are advanced gardeners. I go to Codman Farm every weekend and I would love to work here. I am interested in working on Fridays and Sundays if possible. I go to the horse barn from usually about 11:00-11:30 or 10:00-11:00. Thank you for you time
